Community

Fortis employees invest a lot of energy in community well being. Coaching sports teams, serving on school boards and manning food banks are just a few of the many ways our employees, some 6,500 team members strong, help improve the quality of life in our communities. In 2010 the Fortis Group contributed close to $4.3 million through sponsorships and in-kind donations to many worthwhile causes.

Here’s a few of the partnerships we were proud to be involved with in 2010:

British Columbia proudly hosted the world at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. FortisBC provided one of the iconic symbols for the Games, the 10-metre high steel and glass cauldron, which remains in Vancouver as a lasting legacy for generations to come.

FortisAlberta introduced three new partnerships: Dare to Care Program, an anti-bullying education program that provides students, parents and teachers with skills to prevent and cope with bullying; GreenStart Project, a hands-on learning experience for students to grow and maintain their own mini gardens; and Wild Pink Yonder Society, a mother/son journey in a pink horse-drawn wagon throughout FortisAlberta’s service territory that raised more than $60,000 for the Canadian Cancer Foundation.

Newfoundland Power partnered with the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Care Foundation to open a four-dimensional CT simulator suite at the St. John’s Cancer Centre, enabling cancer care teams to enhance the accuracy of radiation treatment planning. Since 2002 Newfoundland Power’s corporate charity, The Power of Life Project, has raised more than $2 million for research, treatment/awareness initiatives and patient/family support funds in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Maritime Electric’s 15th Annual Charity Golf Tournament surpassed the half-million dollar mark for funds raised for Prince Edward Island charities since the tournament was initially launched. Maritime Electric completed the last installment of a $100,000 pledge to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, which serves as the main referral hospital for Prince Edward Island.

FortisOntario helped promote energy-efficiency initiatives in its service territories and made donations to a number of related community projects, including $10,000 to the Boys and Girls Club in Fort Erie for energy-efficient appliances, $6,500 to the Reach Out Centre, a walk-in/meal program centre in Port Colborne, and $3,500 towards the purchase of an industrial-sized energy-efficient refrigerator for the local area food bank in Gananoque.

Caribbean Utilities employees invested more than 1,300 volunteer hours to community involvement projects, including the Big Brothers-Big Sisters Program, Meals on Wheels, Cadet Corps, Primary Football League, Cayman Islands Scouts Association, Light House School and Sunrise Centre.

Fortis Turks and Caicos held its 2nd Annual Spring Community Walkathon, an event that promotes healthy living for employees, their families and members of the community. The Company also made a donation to the Provo Children’s Home on behalf of employees who participated in the walkathon.

Fortis Properties sponsored the 14th Annual Garden of Hope Radiothon, which raised more than $130,000 in community pledges for the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Care Foundation. Proceeds from the event, including a Company donation of $5,000, will be used for cancer care in Newfoundland and Labrador. Through its weekly Jeans Day initiative, Fortis Properties and employees have contributed almost $12,000 in 2010 to the Cancer Care Foundation’s Kids with Cancer Travel Fund.
