FortisBC Advances Energy Resilience with Tilbury LNG Storage Expansion

November 17, 2025

This project is part of Fortis Inc.’s $28.8 billion five-year capital plan, which focuses on building resilient energy infrastructure across our operations.

Liquefied natural gas (LNG) plays a vital role in British Columbia’s energy mix, providing a reliable and flexible source of energy that supports the province’s transition to a lower-carbon future. FortisBC is investing in infrastructure that strengthens system resilience and ensures continuity of service.

A key part of this effort is the Tilbury LNG Storage Expansion Project, which will replace the original Tilbury facility with a modern, higher-capacity storage tank. The new facility will significantly enhance British Columbia’s ability to manage peak demand and respond to emergencies, with two-thirds of the tank reserved for backup supply during unforeseen disruptions and the remainder supporting high-demand periods.

The project recently received approval from the British Columbia Utilities Commission, and construction is expected to start as early as 2027.

The Tilbury LNG Storage Expansion is part of the broader Tilbury Phase 2 LNG Expansion Project, which continues to progress through its environmental assessment process. This approval is also required for the project to proceed. A decision is expected as early as 2026.

FortisBC remains committed to meaningful engagement with Indigenous partners, First Nations, and local communities throughout the expansion. In 2022, xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) Indian Band and FortisBC signed an agreement to work together toward developing a world-leading LNG facility that delivers long-term benefits for xʷməθkʷəy̓əm and the region.
