Safety and Wellbeing: Newfoundland Power
Using AI to Strengthen Job Safety Planning

 

Newfoundland Power used AI to transform how pre job safety plans (tailboards) are reviewed, analyzed, and used to improve field safety. While meetings were previously recorded, only a small sample of the 20,000 annual tailboards were manually reviewed. Now, AI enables analysis of 100% of tailboard records at a fraction of the time and cost. Dashboards identify trends to support targeted coaching and continuous improvement. As a result, Newfoundland Power has been able to continue its shift to a more proactive approach to safety.

 


Customer Experience: FortisAlberta
Making Solar Connections Simpler for Customers

 

FortisAlberta made it easier for customers to connect their solar systems to the grid, keeping pace with growth in one of North America's largest solar markets. As application volumes have increased, manual, email based workflows became resource intensive. The team introduced a standardized, automated platform that streamlines intake, tracking, and communication. The results were immediate and measurable: processing times dropped by 80% and annual interconnections increased by 40%, while reducing staffing requirements. FortisAlberta is now piloting AI-enabled reviews to further accelerate application screening.

 

 
Operational Excellence: Central Hudson
Predicting Vegetation Risk Before Outages Happen

 

Data-driven vegetation management is improving reliability at Central Hudson. The utility enhanced its regular trimming cycles with a risk-based approach using eight years of outage, weather and vegetation data. The project applied machine learning to pinpoint high-risk locations, enabling targeted trimming and removals ahead of peak storm season. In 2025, vegetation-related outages were reduced by approximately 40%, helping improve reliability for customers across their system. The approach improves reliability, decreases costs and mitigates wildfire risk.

 

 

Sustainable Impact: Caribbean Utilities Company, Ltd.
Modernizing Generation to Lower Costs and Emissions

 

Through innovative generation upgrades, Caribbean Utilities Company, Ltd. (CUC) demonstrates how utilities can simultaneously reduce emissions, strengthen reliability and lower customer costs. Rather than building new generation, CUC transformed existing diesel-powered assets into high-efficiency units. The upgrades are expected to reduce GHG emissions by up to 10%, and also deliver customer savings of 1–2 cents per kWh. Customer benefits exceeded US$3 million in 2025.
