Fortis companies continue to advance wildfire prevention and preparedness, with local plans tailored to the wildfire risk within their respective geographic regions. Across the Fortis group, utilities are deploying innovative technologies, enhancing vegetation management, and implementing Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) programs where appropriate to better predict and respond to wildfire risk.
Data‑driven tools are enabling more proactive planning and faster response. FortisAlberta and UNS Energy are using advanced forecasting tools that model wildfire risk and other extreme weather events, such as high winds, days in advance. This improved visibility supports early decision‑making and targeted prevention measures, including pre‑positioning crews for rapid response.
Innovation is also reshaping vegetation management, a critical component of wildfire mitigation. Maritime Electric is using satellite and AI‑based technology to better classify vegetation and target vegetation management activities. Central Hudson conducts regular ground and aerial patrols of its transmission system to identify and address vegetation risks and plans to integrate LiDAR and AI beginning in 2027 to further enhance risk detection and prioritization along rights of way. In the Caribbean, Caribbean Utilities Company, Ltd. (CUC) has introduced new inspection processes and developed an island‑wide wildfire risk zoning map to identify areas of elevated wildfire risk near its assets.
Strong collaboration with customers, communities, first responders and other external stakeholders is also essential to effective wildfire prevention and preparedness. ITC is engaging with distribution partners and regional utilities on wildfire risk and response, while FortisAlberta is working with other utilities and the provincial government to develop a high‑resolution fuel layer for Alberta, supporting shared wildfire risk assessment and more coordinated response planning.
Together, these efforts highlight how Fortis companies are advancing wildfire prevention and preparedness as part of a broader, data‑driven approach to climate resilience - one that combines innovation and technology with local knowledge, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
